What if the problem isn’t that we don’t know the problems. Or that we’re numb to them. Or that we want to uphold these colonial systems of oppression. Perhaps it’s because we’re unsure what comes next — and we don’t know how to sit with that uncertainty. In the non-stop fashion industry, perhaps we don’t know how to hold space for radical possibilities to emerge.
t h e s p a c e b e t w e e n is about embracing the space in order to create expansive visions for the fashion industry and identify pathways for the transition — collectively.

> WE NEED:
TO DECOLONISE THE FASHION IMAGINATION
We need a collective and personal unlearning — unravelling our internalised colonialism to see how we have served to maintain these extrinsic value systems and exploitative power structures that have not equally supported us to thrive. This research celebrates wholeness and plurality, creating space for our full Selves to show up, alongside expanded value systems, and alternate ways of doing and knowing that have traditionally been ignored.
Imagination is critical in shaping our reality – yet, we currently don’t have exciting visions to the scale and comprehensiveness that’s needed to create systemic, second-order change. We need to break out of our silos and work together to cultivate our curiosity and explore new possibilities, beyond our current paradigms. What does a fashion industry look like when it’s created by and for the people, centring our intrinsic values and wholeness? What visions can emerge from unity and joy? What does rising up together look like? What wild yet thorough possibilities can we design when we foster the collective imagination?
GREATER VISIONS OF A RADICALLY DIFFERENT FASHION INDUSTRY
PATHWAYS TO GET THERE
This is a research project that is focused on shared learning, rather than quick solutions — an iterative, intentional process that can help us to identify pathways and impediments to change. We need space to talk openly about perceived feasibility and emotion. How do we feel about these visions? What do we need to make them happen? What are the greatest limiting beliefs to change? What existing structures are standing in the way? How can we overcome them?
> HOW THIS WORKS
We are creating a transdisciplinary ecosystem that contributes open-source research to the fashion industry, to inspire different ways of doing and being. In opposition to our colonial system’s ‘divide and rule’ philosophy, this work focuses on experimental processes that centre unity and collaboration.
t h e s p a c e b e t w e e n is grounded in the following research approaches:
This process is guided by curiosity, deep questioning, and experimentation, rather than a linear pursuit of one magical copy and paste solution. How can we create the conditions for connection and creativity to flourish?
Alongside encouraging non-hierarchical collaboration and plurality we are also collectively and continually asking: Who gets to participate? Who is excluded? For whom are we making fashion better? Who decides which fashion futures are better for us? Who controls these conversations? Who leads the narrative? What are the privileges of those involved? In which ways are culture and community integrated? Which voices have provided the foundation for this work? How can this process be respectful? How can this process nurture relationships?
Central to this research is exploring distribution of power within both research processes and new visions for the fashion industry. We are inspired by Shawn Ginwright, who writes: “emancipatory research will also require us to move beyond our universities and professional associations to build new infrastructure that can facilitate the free exchange of ideas, tools, and people needed for the greater democratization of knowledge.”

JOIN THE ECOSYSTEM
We are co-creating a living ecosystem of radical thinkers (can be non-fashion specific), creative practitioners, fashion professionals, brands, and makers. We are also looking for funders, journalists, and all-round good people to join the journey.
Let's chat, find out about each other, and see how we can work together. :)
ENTER THE SPACE
Are you a brand looking to get involved? We'd love to delve into t h e s p a c e b e t w e e n with your team in our primary workshop series. This collaborative process explores the three stages outlined above with exciting thinkers and practitioners.
ADDITIONAL // SCHOOL WORKSHOPS
Blending our work with education and this research, we have designed a learning experience for KS4+, to extend these conversations to a younger audience. Our full-day, cross-curricular workshop is a unique opportunity for students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges, in order to nurture skills that will be critical in a changing world.
